Madrid: Monte Abantos

Hello! Welcome to our route through the “unknown Abantos”. Mount Abantos and its surroundings deserve without a doubt a few outings to learn more about its history and natural environment. A mountain that for centuries has served as a resource for humans.
Its biodiversity includes a large number of species of fauna and flora.

During our tour we will see old constructions for the water supply of the Monastery of El Escorial, taking advantage of the natural ramps of Abantos. We will walk along an old
aqueduct from the 18th century. We will go up to the viewpoint of Los Alerces, one of the most beautiful nature walks you can find in the Community of Madrid. We will visit the Cross of Rubens – the real one – where the Dutch painter made his painting of El Escorial, now lost. We will even see an old snow well!

All this surrounded by the unique beauty that this part of the Sierra de Guadarrama offers us, already in the foothills of the area of Malagón.

We remind you, however, that we are in one of the nine protected areas of the Community of Madrid: the Paraje Pintoresco de Abantos y Zona de la Herrería.
